A quick reading of the measure that will go before San Francisco voters in November to decriminalize prostitution easily could leave you with the misimpression that the measure is an exercise in fairness that demands that prosecutors go after men who abuse prostitutes and implement policies "to reduce institutional violence and discrimination against prostitutes." A careful reading of the initiative, "Enforcement of Laws Related to Prostitution and Sex Workers," however, shows a measure that shields child prostitution and traffickers of human beings.

Hope knows that the average age of entry into prostitution is 12 to 14. The office of San Francisco District Attorney Kamala Harris, who opposes the initiative, has encountered prostituted children as young as 9 years old.
Yet the San Francisco ballot measure completely ignores the prostitution of children. The measure simply states, "Law enforcement agencies shall not allocate any resources for the investigation and prosecution of prostitutes for prostitution." Astonishingly, there's no exemption that encourages police to enforce the law for minors.

Let me be clear. I don't want city cops wasting their time prosecuting workers at the discreet bordello that hires healthy adult prostitutes who get regular medical checkups. I would rather see law enforcement focus on serious crimes.
But there is nothing broad-minded about looking the other way when 14-year-old girls and boys sell themselves on the street and massage parlors are staffed by women who are being held against their will. These are not consenting adults.

The NYT has a timely liberal take, relating to the prison problem.
Regardless, so long as the right hand of government knows and cares not what its left hand is doing, giving government more money seems insane.
It may be better to concentrate efforts towards trying to protect youth, while just letting adult addicts wipe themselves out with their own bullsh*t.
Meantime, loading taxpayers with obligations to provide board and room for ever more addict prisoners seems an insane policy.

COMMENTS: In main, I agree with the article quoted from above. But, I disagree with the last sentence. Many forms of addiction necessitate forced rehabilitation. I have addicts (alcoholics and dopers) among relatives or friends. For them, unforced counseling and optional rehabilitative treatments are just laughable loads of social policy lunacy.
After 40 days in jail, one wanted the judge to order her to a 24/7 rehabilitation program. Funds were not available. So, anonymous wanted to stay in jail longer. But the County had no wish to further finance lodging. Basically, they threw him/her out, even though he/she wanted treatment. Within 30 hours, he/she was drunk again. In other words, when the judge threatened more time, he/she doubled down against his bluff, and he blinked. Our government is fundamentally not serious!
Just throwing more money at non-serious government is seriously lame.
What we are living through is a time of failure of will. Because whack-academics have not inspired any reasonable consensus about civilizing fundamentals, history is hardly encouraging. Our governance is by little people, at war with themselves, and no one offers a workably inspiring alternative. Obama’s financiers are just more of the same old.
Oddly enough, I remain inspired by the sort of optimism Churchill had.

Among those who consider themselves liberal, I wonder what proportion are petty thieves, scammers, pimps, poly-amorists, adulterers, head bangers, dopers, gluttons, lay-a-bouts, lacking in military experience, and mainly raised by mommas. I suspect substantial psychological conditioning accounts for inclinations to “think” mainly with feelings. It is quite easy to be liberal, never to have to think beyond feelings, tastes, highs, and short term pleasures, never actually to have to bear responsibility for hard decisions, so long as having “meant well.”
Children Protecting Children:

Regardless how children’s capacities may be affected by genes, we give nurturing a chance to affect how they will become oriented. So, most of us do not profess that adults should be allowed to turn children on to habits of sex, drugs, or violence based on however they may supposedly be “hardwired” at birth. Rather, we try to protect children, to give them time to mature in their own appropriate ways, without being made to twist to any traumatic or overpowering force.
Why, then, is it so often and so dogmatically professed that nurture cannot (or should not?) change orientational hardwiring? And why does it seem that so little effort is made to protect children from being exposed to ubiquitous hardcore advertising, parades, pushers, promotions, and temptations (compare http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hippie)?

I'm not quite sure the Romans' tolerance for Barbarians was what protected a variety of viewpoints.
In any event, to suggest Conservative Traditionalists want a theocracy is to quite overstate the case.
The fact is, many figurative parables and sacred stories as expressed in Judeo-Christian literature do factor into values assimilated in Western Civilization.
It is one thing to appreciate that not all such stories need have literal value in order to appreciate their quite significant, even evolving, figurative value. It is another thing to advocate for no values of decency whatsoever.
A question for leftists is, where, if anywhere, would they define and draw any line against depravity in order to protect civilizing decency?
Lacking personal discipline, Leftists may eventually find themselves needing to facilitate or surrender to something like Theocratic Sharia Law, in order to give structure to their lives. But I doubt most American Conservative Traditionalists do.
REGARDING GAY POLITICAL AGENDA:
By and large, many social conservatives do not much care what gays do in private. But they do care when gays try to force government (taxpayer’s money) to recognize and fund gay oriented political inclinations. There is no saving grace for the train the gay coalition political agenda is on. You roll with it, you may as well roll for anything, but you won’t roll with social conservatives. You can get run over while strolling on the tracks with Libertarians or you can ride on the Democrat Express, but you won’t ride with social conservatives while carrying water for a gay political agenda. Choose your track or train, but whining about it won’t cut any ice. Stop shape-shifting and shape up.
